basic_sounds is proud to present Broken, Michael Pettit’s second exquisite piano-driven house album under his Chord moniker. Primarily known for his deep dub soundscapes as Overcast Sound, Broken shifts him closer to the sacred productions of Bruno Pronsato or Francis Harris, demonstrating his mastery of craft and individual approach to structure and composition. Technically each track compliments the next and acts as a continuation of his first release, Year As A Ghost.
“Hanging On To What I Know” opens the EP with sentimental piano melodies and nostalgic crackles, alluding to the past with elements of uplifting beauty and optimism through his skillfully placed beat structure. The title track, “Broken” is a somber number with organic breaths, vocal snippets and fluid percussion transitions. “This Distance Is Your Disappointment” is an honest and melancholy modern classical piece with delicate fuzzy distortion. Closing the release, “Doesn’t Change” begins with a trudging pace, as if one is walking through crunchy snow. Pettit brilliantly builds the composition with gasping female vocal clips and warm piano chords, ultimately creating a flawless climax for the release.
