Oakland based composer, improviser and Full Spectrum label owner, Andrew Weathers delivers Raised High in Badwater Basin, recorded July 10th to 14th, 2014 in Alameda, California. Known primarily for his folk experimental guitar manipulations, Andrew abandons the guitar to create something completely unique for basic_sounds.
The Badwater Basin in Death Valley California is the lowest point in North America, with an elevation of 282 ft below sea level. There is a small spring-fed pool of “bad water" next to the road in a sink; the accumulated salts of the surrounding basin make it undrinkable, thus giving it the name. From the depths of the Death Valley, Andrew enlightens and lifts one from the darkness with his twinkling, dancing synth clusters . Upon first listening to “There's Gold in These Hills,” I instantly had images of floating-up with bubbles delicately swirling around me and brushing my skin. Closing the EP, “Last Light at Sonora Pass” is a soft, delicate composition with sparse warm bell tones. Peaceful images of stars lighting up the nights sky dance in my head. Andrew Weathers’ sentimental optimism and trance-like pulsating synth patterns will warm your heart and elevate any day. Gorgeous.
